Abstract

This research delves into the correlation between distinct practices within sex work and the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among female sex workers (FSWs) in Bangladesh. Employing a cross-sectional study design, the investigation aims to elucidate the patterns of risk behavior and their impact on STI transmission dynamics among this vulnerable population. Key risk behaviors under scrutiny encompass condom use consistency, engagement in unprotected sex, frequency of client turnover, and exposure to violence or coercion. Through quantitative analysis of survey data and clinical examination for STI diagnosis, the study endeavors to discern the extent to which these behaviors contribute to the burden of STIs among Bangladeshi FSWs. Furthermore, the research seeks to explore the contextual factors and structural determinants that shape risk behaviors within the sex work industry. This includes examining the influence of socio-economic vulnerabilities, stigma, and legal frameworks on FSWs' ability to negotiate safer sexual practices and access healthcare services. By shedding light on the complex interplay between risk behaviors, social determinants, and STI prevalence, this study aims to inform targeted interventions and policy initiatives aimed at reducing the transmission of STIs among FSWs in Bangladesh. Strategies for enhancing access to comprehensive sexual health services, promoting condom use, and addressing structural barriers to safer sex negotiation are emphasized. Ultimately, this research strives to contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of STIs within the context of sex work in Bangladesh, with implications for public health programming, advocacy, and the promotion of sexual and reproductive health rights for marginalized populations.
